History

The area was originally occupied by the Coast Miwok native people, but through a land grant in 1844 the Rohnert Park area was combined with the present day Penngrove and Cotati and eventually broken up and sold to settlers coming to the area. The city was named after the Rohnert family who owned a large seed farm. The farm grew to be a very successful business and horticultural venture in the county. By 1956 only 4 adults resided in the district, but in 1957 the beginning of the planned city was underway. Rohnert Park was incorporated in 1962 and approximately 2,780 people inhabited the area.
